5 out of 5 stars Sweet USP .45 Spring Gun   June 21, 2009

I usually look at a lot of reviews and comments before I purchase anything like this, but I had to get something quick and wanted something comparable to my UTG MK23 Navy SEAL spring pistol. I'm going to be airsofting with a friend who doesn't own a gun yet, so I wanted to even the odds without spending a fortune on an AEG rifle. Boy, did I get lucky with this purchase!

This gun arrived in perfect condition. It came in a plastic bubble package, but contained the gun and some free .20g seamless .6mm BBs. The magazine is about the same as the one on the MK23, but feels a little heavier. It may be weighted, but whatever the reason it feels sturdy in my grip. This gun has a metal barrel and feels pretty hefty for a $23 gun. It is also very comfortable in my hand compared to the MK23 which is a beast. I have small hands and this gun fits perfectly. I can work the magazine release and safety without having to stretch or twist my grip at all.

The magazine is a bit of a pain to load. You have to feed the ammo in from the top. But it holds 25 rounds comfortably and may be easier to load with the speed loader. I haven't tried that yet. The action is a little bit easier than the MK23's. It feels more durable too when you are pulling back on the slide. After firing a few magazines worth off, it gets easier to rack the slide.

I fired both guns at targets from approximately 30 feet. Both guns have almost the same power at this range as my KWC Sig Sauer P226 GBB. I would say that the 240 fps is a little exaggerated. Maybe 240fps with .12g BBs, but probably around 220 or 225 fps though with .20gs.

This gun is nice to shoot and has pretty decent accuracy for a spring gun. It's a bit of a pain to have to cock the gun for each shot, but it is fairly easy to get a quick sight picture and fire. Compared to my P226 GBB, I really prefer the GBB because you can empty the magazine without taking the gun off of the target and it has more realistic recoil, but it takes longer to reload because of the gas. Also, magazines are hard to find for the GBB gun and they are almost as expensive as the gun itself. For $23, this H&K USP is a sweet gun. It is a bargain for the price and a blast to shoot. (Although I couldn't find any spare magazines for this gun, I could buy a whole new gun for less than the price of a GBB magazine would be for my P226.)

Next week I'll be testing this gun out in the field. I can't wait. If there are any major developments, I will post again. But I think this is a nice, reliable, inexpensive pistol to start out with. If the dimensions of the grip are the same as the real USP .45, I will be buying one asap. It is a nice licensed replica though and a good addition to any collection. I'm looking for a nice GBB version of this gun now as well.

Pros - Feels sturdy and durable
Comfortable even for smaller hands
Accurate
Decent power
Magazine capacity is good
More realistic weight than most inexpensive guns

Cons - Kind of a pain to load by hand (Same as the MK23)
Have to cock it for each shot (As with all spring guns)
Only comes with one magazine

NOTE: I have searched for a back-up magazine for this gun and have been unsuccessful. The manufacturer's web site doesn't even list H&K's on the site. It is a shame that you cannot get a second or third magazine for this gun without buying a whole new gun. I would knock it down to 4 of 5 stars because of this. Overall, I still love this gun, but having one magazine is a drawback I cannot overlook.

5 out of 5 stars great gun   August 27, 2010

I ordered this gun May second of 010, and it arrived quickly. As expected it was plastic (plastic body, a few metal innards) which was just fine. It came with some bbs with which I tested the gun out. It has fairly good accuracy and has a good range. .12 bbs do tend to curve, but popping in .2 bbs will fix that immediately. I have dropped this gun a few times, fell with it in my hands, ect, and it still works perfectly. Not to mention, the power is just perfect. It holds 25 bbs in one clip, as advertised, and I have never had any problems with jamming. At first its a little tough to cock, but you get used to it as you wear it in. I still use mine constantly -- I would recommend this airsoft gun to anyone. Worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Decent gun for the money, but has definite flaws   June 22, 2010

Be prepared, this is going to be a long and thorough review. Any questions about this specific gun, just contact me here.

Okay, the spring H&K USP was an airsoft gun I've been looking to getting for a while. After a bit of browsing, I decided to invest on this one found here from Amazon, instead of directly from other major airsoft places (I'm a bit iffy about giving my credit card information elsewhere). This pistol here was pretty much what I was looking for. I wanted something similar, if not exact, to the real thing (size-wise).

A few days after ordering, my package arrived on time, just as estimated. When receiving the package, I notice the gun was in a plastic sort of blister packing. It came with the gun (with rubber safety muzzle stopper already in the barrel), single magazine, safety pamphlet, and some .12g white BBs. This is where my review starts to take a turn for the negative. Upon seeing the actual gun, I noticed that it wasn't EXACTLY how it was pictured in the pictures at Amazon OR the actual retailer (Pyramyd Air). In the pictures, it was shown to be one complete dark greyish tone with red "fire" indicator in the safety and red HK logo on the grip. The gun I received was in fact TWO toned (dark grey slide, solid black frame) and the fire indicator was just black. That didn't bother me too much, but I did expect a completely solid color throughout the entire gun, as advertised. Aside from that, the only other real cosmetic flaw to the gun would be that the ejection port isn't exactly "level" when the gun is uncocked. It seems to only be completely straight when cocked back. Again, not too much of a problem. The gun feels very solid and sturdy. The entire frame is made of some sort of high quality plastic (not sure if it's actually ABS or something else similar) and metal internal parts. The magazine is plastic also and holds 25 BBs. I actually took a magnet and found that the only major pieces of (magnetic) metal in the gun were in the front where the integrated rail is and in the magazine. They are probably there for added weight. All these components give the gun a nice weight. Not as much as a real EMPTY USP weighs, but has about a pound and a half of weight to it.

Okay, this section includes the functions of the gun. First thing I noticed when preparing to test fire was that the magazine had a bit of a wobble AND a rattle (from the spring in the magazine, even when full) when inside the gun. The hammer is fully functional. Every time the trigger is pulled, the hammer cycles and strikes. Every time the slide is pulled and the gun is cocked, the hammer stays down. The only safety this gun has is the trigger safety in the left side of the gun. Turning the safety on requires you to first manually pull down the hammer and then switching to safety. There is also a slide stop, but that is just for looks and is actually used to take apart the gun. The magazine release is just as it should be. Ambidextrous release beneath the trigger guard; smooth and easy. The slide is a whole different story, but I will talk about that later. The slide does pull back and recoil back into place, but once again, slide stop does not work so you won't know when you've used your last shot.

Now this is all about the operating and firing performance of the gun. When first gripping the gun, it sort of feels a bit more "square" than expected, but I eventually got used to it. This next issue is one of my biggest complaints. When you pull back the slide, it is really choppy and resistant. I've fired other different types of airsoft guns before and this slide is one of the worst. You have to use a bit more arm strength than any other gun to just pull back the slide. The whole issue with the choppiness of the slide is bothersome, but you do get used to it. By choppy, i mean it doesn't slide back in one smooth motion. It sort of "gets caught" in more than one places during the sliding process, causing you to pull harder. Other than that, the ejection port also has some issues, but not too big. On more than one occasion, I ended up pinching my finger from a mis-rack of the slide. Blood was nearly shed due to the sheer power of the spring. I guess it would also be my fault for leaving my finger close to the port, but it's in a really inconvenient spot for me. Another issue I have regards the barrel. Keep in mind, the barrel is not fixed. When you rack back the slide, the barrel becomes sort of "loose" so if you wave it around a lot, it will rattle against the frame. Not too big of an issue, but just something to note. My last operating issue is more towards the functional side. This one has got to be hands down the most ANNOYING thing about this gun. I haven't had this happen to a lot of guns I've fired, but the magazine is an utter PAIN. The prongs that holds the BBs in place in the magazine is fairly weak, so one wrong touch would send them ALL spewing out! On top of that, I actually mean this statistic when I say it, but 100% of the time I released the magazine with BBs still inside, 1-2 BBs ALWAYS fall out. This is a constant occurrence that gets really tiring after a while. If anything were to bring the rating for this gun down, it would be the horrible magazine construction (or possibly the BB feeding mechanism). Anyway, moving on. The firing was impressive, to say the least. There is an integrated hop up system, but it's not adjustable. The gun is actually fairly accurate with .12g BBs from about 30-40 feet. I was just shooting from spots in my backyard, so no real range testing could be done. I was surprised how well the sights worked. Though there aren't any painted dots for the rear OR front sights, just lining them up seemed to be accurate (for a spring pistol).

All in all, this is a fine gun for maybe a beginner or someone looking for a replica of the real thing. This gun would be recommended for it's price and accuracy.

Notable Pros:
-Design is of 1:1 scale of real gun
-Construction of gun is great
-Very sturdy and solid with reliable moving parts
-Large magazine
-Rather accurate for a spring pistol

Notable Cons:
-Was not actual color I expected as advertised
-Ejection port isn't level
-Non-working slide stop
-Slide very hard to pull back and choppy
-Barrel rattles against frame when cocked
-(WORST) Magazine poorly made
--Internal spring rattles
--Prongs don't hold BBs too well, causing a wrong touch to spew entire magazine
--When magazine is released, 1-2 BBs ALWAYS fall out

Final Rating: 4/5 Stars
